No fewer than 160 golfers including former Plateau State Governor, Sen. Simon Lalong, former speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara have registered for the maiden Kwara Governor’s Cup Open Golf tournament.
Director of Tournament, Barr. Oludare Akanbi, made this known during an interview with the newsmen on Thursday in Ilorin, said the tournament which draws golfers from various golf clubs across the country would commence from on Nov. 15 to Nov. 17.2024
According to him, the marketers and organisers of the event, Sluqfort Nigeria Limited have put arrangements in top gears to ensure a hitch-free competition that will get golfers competing over 36 holes.
He said competitors would be in llorin on the 15 for a welcome cocktail at the Ultra-Modern Mohammed Lawal Club House, ahead of the competition which tees-off officially on 16.November.
“Expected to perform the ceremonial tee-off is Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of of Kwara and the Sardauna of Ilorin Emirates, who is also the Patron of the Club.
“The best 100 players from the first day round will qualify to play on Sunday while the closing ceremony and presentation of prizes will follows” Akanbi adding that, “Sluqfort Nigeria Limited, the marketing outfit for the event was able to attract lots of sponsors and donors to identify with the event.
According to Akanbi, the sponsors includes the Kwara State Government, Sen. Sadiq Umar (Kwara North) Sen. Lola Ashiru (Kwara South), Sen. Simon Bako Lalong, Rt. Hon. Yakubu Dogara, Chief (Mrs) Grace Ihonvbere, Hon. Tunji Olawuyi AjuloOpin (Irepodun/Ekiti/Isin/Oke Ero) Federal Constituency.
Others are Engr Lanre Sagaya, Emirate Global Hotels, Femtech IT, Momrota Pharmacy and Rotamedics Pharmacy, Chief Kam Abioye, and Erelu Bola Yusuf.
He further explained that there are gross and net prizes for both male and female categories as well as Veterans and Super Veterans.
Also expected to take part in the competition are, Chairman BoT of the club, Justice Lambo Akanbi (Rtd) and other members of the Boardasides such as Engr. Lanre Sagaya, Otunba Olusola Adekanola and Pharm. Layi Maliki.
Others are Alhaji Tajudeen Oladipo, Ms Zulu Omo-Ikerodah former President of Ladies Golfers Association of Nigeria and a member of the Board of the Nigeria Golf Federation, as well as Colonel Ade Sunmonu of Ibadan Golf Club.
Home players to watch out for according to Akanbi are Malik Mustapha, Habeeb Azeez, Ayomiposi Lawal and Ayanfeoluwa Adekeye while visiting golfers in the likes of Tunde Owolabi from Abeokuta Golf Club and Olumide Afolabi of Ikoyi Golf Club won’t be push asides.
