Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike has disclosed the reason why he had to reduced the 11,000 hectares of land hitherto believed to have been allocated to the University of Abuja now known as Yakubu Gowon University.
He said FCT Administration under his leadership took the action as a result of the university authorities failure to provide any legal document backing allocation of such magnitude of land to the institution.
Wike made this known on Monday at the commissioning ceremony of the newly constructed access road to Giri District of the FCT.
He said the university merely acquiring the land through land grabbing activities, saying that with the completion of the access road to the district, it will stop such illegal activities.
” This road has helped us to stop the land grabbing by the University. The University on their own grabbed 11,000 hectares. I said that will not happen. No document, nothing. You see them fencing everywhere, and before you know it, they would have gone to sell our land.
” So I’ve told the Director of Lands and the other relevant agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give to the University. The other ones would be reallocated because we are going to provide the roads here, and that is the true situation.
” We cannot allow anybody do such things . You just wake up in the morning, all you see is fencing all over, no document, nothing. That is not the way we are supposed to work.
